Of all the images of the book, the whooper swan was the most obvious. identifiable, beloved and majestic.
judi uses ai and works from her sketched compositions and prompts highly detailed narratives into dalle-3, her chosen Ai platform. this image, looking up at the swan to the sky above took just over two hours to refine. the chosen image was then taken into photo-shop to refine further.
the composition was chosen to show the swans habitat in lakes and rivers, diving down to the stony floor amongst the weeds, and as happy on the surface as diving to depths to look for food.
with 33 plates to complete, the whole project took the illustrator six months, referring to field guides, noting their habitat, and whether seabirds, more coastal or estuary.
